SOCIAL THEORY, SOCIAL FORMATION AND SOCIALWORK
The object of this concentration area is social theory as a methodological, political and theoretical basis for reflecting upon Brazilian and Latin American social formation; as well as Social Work and the different dimensions of theoretical and political production regarding the Capitalist Mode of Production of social classes, and the State and Public Policies in their contemporaneousness.
Research Lines:
FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL THEORY: Bases of social theory (method, critique of political economy, political theory) as the foundation of the critique of sociability in the Capitalist Mode of Production and its expression in the various Latin American Social Formations.

STATE, CLASSES AND SOCIAL POLICIES: Social Theory and Social Work. This research line analyzes social classes, political processes and the State; class struggle and public fund, nature and character of Social Policies. It also studies the urban and the rural issue in contemporary Capitalism.

II. Concentration Area
WORK, SOCIAL STRUGGLES, SOCIAL POLICY AND SOCIAL WORK
The objective of this concentration area is to carry out surveys on the historical-critical perspective on the development of Capitalism and its contemporary determinations. It examines work in its ontological conception and in the capitalist social form. It also studies the State, society and social classes, and the social question and its expressions. In addition, this concentration area considers Social Policy: foundations and historical conformations; as well as social protection in Brazil, in Latin America and in the world. It also focuses on corporate and professional projects: their grounds and programmatic strategies; and it researches Social Work in History, and professional culture and ethical-political project. It finally studies social-professional and political insertion of social workers.

It also studies the movement of social classes in the countryside and in the city. This research line also considers Social Policy: foundations and historical conformations, as well as social protection in Brazil, in Latin America and in the world, and the different corporate and professional projects: their grounds and programmatic strategies.

WORK, KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION AND SOCIAL WORK: Work in its ontological conception and in capitalist social form, accrual schemes and forms of workforce management. This research line examines the foundations of bourgeois society and its historical particularities as the basis for the genesis and development of Social Work in Brazil and in other countries. It also takes into consideration class struggle, professional culture, ethical-political project and contemporary agenda of Social Work, as well as corporate transformations and social-occupational spaces and political organizations. This research line has eventually as object professional training and knowledge production.

III. Concentration Area
CULTURE AND SOCIAL WORK
This concentration area analyzes the cultural dimension of the processes of collective identities construction; the social movements - urban and rural - and their relations with the State and the market; political culture, collective actions and institutions; participation, power relations and citizenship; the intergenerational and inter-ethnic gender relations in the public and private spaces; and the interface of these issues with Social Work.
Research Lines:
STATE, SOCIETY AND HUMAN RIGHTS: It investigates the relations between the State/civil society in the configuration of a field of social struggles focused on human rights, and their implications in the formulation and implementation of public policies. It also considers democracy and strengthening of the public sphere, within the framework of the globalization of the economy and culture.

URBAN SUBJECTS AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS: It studies the theoretical and methodological contributions about the city; urban transformations; social movements and social representations of territoriality. It also considers the City and Public Policies, Trajectories, identity constructions and class, religious, racial/ethnic, gender and generational inequalities; social networks, family and sociability.

About PPGSS
Program Overview
The academic and administrative activities of the Social Work Postgraduate Program (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Serviço Social - PPGSS) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) are developed at the the seat of the School of Social Work, in Praia Vermelha Campus. The Master Degree began in 1976 and the PhD Degree in 1994. The Doctorate was the first public degree in Social Work.
One of the bases of the offered consistent academic background is the excellence of the qualification of the team of professors. Because of that, there is an enormous demand of students coming from all Brazilian states, as well as from other countries in South America, originating from the most varied courses in Humanities and Social Sciences.
A consistent trend is observed over the last two decades of existence of the Doctorate, which is the formation of theoretical-intellectual frameworks for the exercise of teaching in higher education, revealing its enormous capacity to form a critical mass.
The three areas of concentration and the lines of research associated with allow the research centers to promote the exchange between teaching and production of knowledge, involving Postgraduate students and teachers/researchers from other programs. The implementation of cooperation agreements at the national and international levels enables a profitable academic exchange with important Universities and Research Centers.
Revista Praia Vermelha
A Revista Praia Vermelha é uma publicação semestral do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Serviço Social da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, cujo objetivo é construir um instrumento de interlocução com outros centros de pesquisa do Serviço Social e áreas afins, colocando em debate as questões atuais, particularmente aquelas relacionadas à “Questão Social” na sociedade brasileira.
